Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo Is Home to More Than 2,000 Animals:

With over 2,000 animals situated in lush habitats spread out over more than 50 acres, Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo has been recognized as the country's top family-friendly zoo by Child magazine.

The zoo is divided into several different habitats, including:

  • Asian Gardens - Home of the Asian python, clouded leopard, greater Indian rhinoceros, Komodo dragon, Sri Lankan sloth bear and white tiger.
  • Safari Africa & Ituri Forest - Here guests will find the African elephant, cheetah, dromedary camel, Grant's zebra, pygmy hippopotamus, Thomson's gazelle and white rhinoceros.
  • Primate World - The Angolan black and white colobus, Bornean Orangutan, chimpanzee, collared lemur and other primates flourish in this habitat.
  • Wallaroo Station - The Australian milieu houses the Australorp chicken, Barbados sheep, Bennett's Wallaby, eastern grey kangaroo, emu, flying fox bat, kookaburra and New Guinea singing dog.
  • Free Flight Aviaries - Animals found in the Free Flight Aviaries include the roseate spoonbill, Bali mynah, two-toed sloth, Toco toucan, scarlet macaw and masked lapwing.
  • Florida Boardwalk - Visit with the alligator snapping turtle, American crocodile, Atlantic stingray, bald eagle, Florida black bear, Florida panther and red wolf.
  • Florida Manatee & Aquatic Center - In this habitat, guests will discover the West Indian manatee as well as snakes such as the Southern copperhead and Burmese python, as well as fish and the Moray eel.
  • Birds of Prey - Also known as raptors, birds of prey found in this habitat include the American kestrel, Andean condor, black vulture, great horned owl and Mississippi kite.

At Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, visitors also may interact with animals under the guidance of zoo keepers. Regularly scheduled shows include a Penguin Encounter, Primate Keeper Encounter, Critter Encounter, Manatee Encounter and the Alligator Feeding.

For an additional cost, rides like the Treetop Skyfari and Muster Ride offer guests another way to check out all the animals at the zoo. The zoo also offers two water play areas for children: Manatee Fountains, near the zoo's main entrance, and Billabong Fountains in Wallaroo Station. Kids also enjoy the Woolshed Playground in Wallaroo Station which boasts slides, tunnels and ladders.

The Florida Environmental Education Center, located at Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, serves more than 147,000 children annually and offers summer and holiday camps, daycare, preschool and kindergarten programs.
