Pinellas County's Tropicana Field Changed St. Petersburg's Landscape :
Formerly known as the Florida Suncoast Dome and the ThunderDome, Tropicana Field was originally built to lure a Major League Baseball team to the area.
The venue has hosted a wide variety of sporting events and competitions over the years, including hockey, basketball, football, sprint car racing, gymnastics, soccer, tennis, weightlifting, equestrian events and even ping-pong. Home of the Tampa Bay Rays, the ballpark features a 10,000-gallon tank which serves as home to more than 30 cownose rays that fans can touch and feed during games.
The facility was home to the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning from 1993 through 1996. From 1994 through 1996, the Arena Football League's Tampa Bay Storm called the ThunderDome home.
TheTampa Bay Rays, formerly Tampa Bay Devil Rays, is an expansion franchise founded in 1998 in St. Petersburg. The Rays have played at Tropicana Field since 1998.
