Visit History at Pinellas County's Heritage Village:
Heritage Village is a 21-acre living history museum located in the heart of Pinellas County. Here, within the natural pine and palmetto landscape, visitors will return to life as it was during the days when Florida pioneers had just begun to settle in the Tampa Bay area.
Since it first opened in 1977, Heritage Village has helped visitors learn about the county's beginnings, its first families and the evolution of its many communities. Home to more than 28 structures and features, some buildings date back to the mid- to late-19th century.
Strolling beneath the pines at Heritage Village, visitors will find many restored structures, such as:
- The House of Seven Gables, a turn-of-the-century Victorian style home built in 1907 and furnished with artifacts from the period.
- The Plant-Sumner House, built in 1896 by the Henry Plant Company while the Belleview-Biltmore Hotel was under construction.
- The Harris School, built in 1912 by William B. Harris on Haines Road in St. Petersburg, was in use until 1923; the replica found at Heritage Village was built in 1987 as part of celebrations commemorating the 75th anniversary of Pinellas.
- The Mercantile Store, a 1915 store originally found in St. Petersburg and fully refurbished thanks to the efforts of the Pin-Mar Antique Car Club.
- The McMullen House, built in 1868 by Largo pioneer Daniel McMullen, which now serves as a fiber arts center featuring a variety of craft demonstrations and displays.
- The Walsingham House, a 1915 home which was the home of Jesse Ancil Walsingham, a prominent early Pinellas County community leader.
Other structures include a church, railroad depot, sponge warehouse and additional homes including the oldest existing structure in the county, the McMullen-Coachman Log Cabin, which dates to 1852.
The Heritage Village Visitor Center includes galleries highlighting local history as well as artifacts from the permanent collection. The Heritage Village Archives and Library encompasses a collection of 3,500 books and periodicals as well as historic photographs, maps and special collections.
Visitors will find that much of the village is self-guided, though some guided tours of Seven Gables, Plant-Sumner and Walsingham houses and the HC Smith Store are available. Tour times vary daily.
Heritage Village plays host to several events and festivals throughout the year, including the Pinellas Folk Festival (January), Civil War Days (May) and the annual Country Jubilee (October).
