Brandon Community Continues to Grow:
Brandon takes its name from John Brandon, who settled in the area in the late 1850s. Originally known as New Hope, the community changed its name about the time Florida Central and Peninsula railroad came through the area and John’s second wife, Victoria, asked a civil engineer to help survey the area.
Brandon has experienced recurring growth spurts, the most recent and ongoing boom beginning in the mid-1980s when an extension of Interstate 75 began bringing increased traffic to what is known as Tampa “bedroom” community. Hillsborough Community College maintains a campus in Brandon and the community is the birthplace of the Beef O’Brady’s chain of restaurants. One of the largest malls in the region, Westfield Brandon, is located just off Interstate 75.
The Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1959. The chamber publishes Brandon Business Monthly as well as the Brandon Business Directory.
