Skipper's Smokehouse Serves Up Delicious Florida Grub:

In a style that is distinctly Floridian, Skipper's Smokehouse Restaurant & Oyster Bar has evolved from its humble roots as a smokehouse takeout business to a full-fledged restaurant hosting international as well as local recording artists.

The Menu

Skipper's menu features Florida cuisine with a touch of Louisiana goodness and an occasional Caribbean twist. Favorites include the black bean gator chili, alligator ribs and fried gator tail. There's plenty of farm-raised catfish, oysters, clams and shrimp as well as Gulf Coast staples like grouper and conch.

Signature dishes include:

  • Ahi Carpaccio
  • Louisiana Mudbugs
  • Black Beans and Yellow Rice
  • Smoked Mullet
  • Stone Crab
  • Soft Shell Crab
  • Jerk Chicken

The Venue

Able to seat 800, Skipper's attracts some of the biggest names in blues, reggae, zydeco, bluegrass, jazz, folk and worldbeat. Situated outside beneath sprawling live oaks, the stage faces a hodgepodge of picnic benches, chairs and a covered tiki deck. Locals dubbed the backyard concert area "the Skipperdome." Performers who have appeared at Skipper's include:
  • Buckwheat Zydeco
  • Buddy Guy
  • Derek Trucks
  • Diamond Teeth Mary McClain
  • Magadog
  • Biscuit Burners
  • Blind Boys of Alabama
  • Camper Van Beethoven
  • Canned Heat
  • New Riders of the Purple Sage
  • Rick Derringer

Although Skipper's has become a venue for a variety of musical styles, the venue began mainly as a home for blues and reggae. In recognition of this, the Blues Foundation honored Skipper's Smokehouse in 2001 with its Best Blues Club in America award.
