Guide Review – Old Northeast Tavern

Off the beaten path of downtown St. Petersburg, is a little bar with big flavor. It’s known to the locals as their local pub, but to folks that try it for the first time, it instantly is seen as an unexpected gem. I had the pleasure of dining at Old Northeast Tavern with some girlfriends of mine. The perfect example of not judging a book by its cover, I was pleasantly surprised by the food I devoured there! Forget the wine and beer because just on the food alone this place is a great one to experience. Sure, they have fine wine, full liquor and plenty of beers to choose from, but the menu of food is far from your traditional “barf” food as I’ve come to joke some places serve. This bar food is gourmet and drool worthy.

Let’s start with the appetizers. Move over hot wings and tortilla chips. You have been replaced by Smoked Salmon Bruschetta, Crab Stuffed Portabellas, Maine Lobster Cannolis and Ahi Tuna Sashimi. The Smoked Salmon Bruschetta features smoked Nova Scotia salmon on toasted baguette with dill Dijon sauce, fresh tomato, onion, caper, garlic and dill relish. The Crab Stuffed Portabellas have melted provolone cheese served in a moat of crab and lobster sauce. The Maine Lobster Cannolis combines lobster salad in a crunchy flour tortilla roll and then gets drizzled with a lemon tarragon gastrique. Lastly the Ahi Tuna Sashimi is served rare with a soy sauce, seaweed salad, pickled ginger and wasabi.

The salads at many bars are poor blends of wilting lettuce and watered down dressing. This is far from the case at Old Northeast Tavern. Get adventurous and consider a Gorgonzola pear salad with fresh mixed field greens, sliced pears, Gorgonzola cheese, toasted walnuts and smoked bacon with sweet onion vinaigrette. If that doesn’t sound appealing, try the Asian Chicken Salad with fried chicken, mandarin oranges, sliced almonds, dried noodles and sesame ginger vinaigrette.

Even the pizza at the bar is something to write home about. Forget the standard pepperoni and cheese! The namesake Old Northeast Pie features prosciutto, sliced tomato, Brie cheese, artichoke hearts and black olives. For a more intense pie there is the Cajun Chicken Pie with Cajun blackened chicken, roasted tomato sauce, bacon, artichoke hearts, mozzarella, parmesan cheese, montrachet goat cheese and green onion.

Cheeseburgers may not be on the menu, but they really aren’t missed with the assortment of gourmet sandwiches to choose from. For a hearty meal try the Tavern Steak Sandwich with its flank steak, portabella, tomato, provolone, spinach and chipotle aioli on ciabatta bread. If you are going the vegetarian route consider the Zucchini Sandwich with fresh grilled zucchini, fire roasted red bell pepper, calamata olives, crispy capers, herb montrachet cheese topped with a balsamic reduction and served on ciabatta bread. For the not so adventurous, there are some traditional sandwiches available too. Options for non adventurous include the corned beef Reuben, the ham and Swiss and the Roast Beef.

There are so many delicious options to choose from at Old Northeast Tavern. Sure, they may be a little out of the box and out of the ordinary, but somehow the combinations that are on the menu always end up being crowd pleasers. Oh yeah, and in case you forgot, there are plenty of beer, wine and cocktail options to think about too.
