Guide Review – Chihuahua Mexican Grill
The best spot to grab some Mexican food for lunch in South Tampa is Chihuahua Mexican Grill. If nothing else, its hard to beat the prices. The food doesn't suck even though parking at lunch time does and the portions will leave you so full you may have to take your belt to the next notch.
The colors inside the place match the Mexican flag and everywhere you look is either a picture of a chihuahua, a plush toy chihuahua or a plastic one.
Upon arrival, the staff brings you a dog bowl filled with multicolor tortilla chips. The salsa is an acquired taste for some, but most people seem to like it right away. As you are stuffing your face, the wait staff takes your order and the bottomless bowl of chips feeding frenzy continues until your food is ready.
A must try is the enchiladas. During lunch you will receive two enchiladas with chicken, beef or pork with beans, rice, veggies and a iced tea for just $7.50. The best is the chicken in my opinion. It's just delicious!
The lunch burrito is huge! It comes smothered in spicy green chile or mild ranchero sauce and is filled with beans, lettuce, sour cream and pico de gallo with your choice of meat. Many of my pals that have ordered this have had to cut in half and save a portion for later.
If salads are more your thing, they have a large taco salad for just $7. The bowl it comes in is edible and features a a crispy flour tortilla bowl filled with lettuce, pico de gallo, Mexican cheese, guacamole and sour cream. There is a fee to add meat. $2 for Pollo Asado and $3 for shrimp.
Wanting a light lunch? You can order a single taco, enchilada, flauta or side of vegetables for just $3. Want a big lunch with multiple items? Order several sides or just order one side with a bowl of soup and you've got a delicious self created combo. The two soups are Albondigas and Sopa De Pollo. In the Albondigas is Mexican meatballs and veggies. The Sopa De Pollo has hot and hearty chunks of chicken with fresh dices avocados and tortilla strips in chicken broth.
For dessert your options are Flan which is a a smooth, rich egg custard topped with creamy Mexican caramel for $3.00, Fried Ice Cream which features strawberry cheese cake ice cream or chocolate ice cream, topped with whipped cream and raspberry sauce for $4.50 or Sopapillas which is a fluffy dessert tortilla topped with chocolate syrup, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles for $4.00.
Kid's menu items include a flauta, a quesadilla, chicken fingers or a taco with a drink for $5.
A good idea would be to get there before the lunch rush. The place really gets crazy between noon and 1 p.m. The lunch specials begin at 11 a.m. and the closer to that time that you arrive, the better.
