History of Mahaffey Theater:
The Mahaffey Theater originally opened in 1965 as part of the Bayfront Center entertainment complex, although it did not get its name until a 1980s renovation. The name comes from a St. Petersburg family who contributed a significant amount to the capital campaign. When the Bayfront Center could no longer compete with other area venues, the arena was demolished opening up space for the current incarnation of the Mahaffey Theater. A $20-million project more than doubled the Mahaffey’s lobby size and a three-story glass curtain wall and glass-enclosed atrium overlooking the city’s downtown waterfront.

The Mahaffey Theater at the Progress Energy Center for the Arts also offers meeting and reception space for catered events in the newly renovated Grand Ballroom, the Bayview Room, the East Atrium and the Conference Room.
