History of Jannus Landing Courtyard:

Billed as Florida’s “oldest and largest outdoor concert venue,” Jannus Landing Courtyard takes its name from famed Tampa Bay area aviator Tony Jannus, who, back in 1914, made history piloting the first flight of the St. Petersburg-Tampa Airboat Line across the bay. The 22-minute trip was the inaugural flight of what was the first regularly scheduled airline service in the world.

While many of the buildings surrounding the courtyard have been there since the 1880s, concerts in the courtyard weren’t commonplace until the 1980s.

Enjoying a Performance at Jannus Landing Courtyard:

At least one adjacent building dates back to 1888 which explains how Jannus Landing Courtyard can claim to be the oldest concert venue in the state. Situated right in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg, the facility is capable of putting on both indoor and outdoor performances, although it’s the gigs in the courtyard that attract the most attention.

That attention, incidentally, has been a mix of commendation and contempt over the last few decades. Those who seek to revitalize the downtown vicinity praise the venue for attracting younger generations to the shopping and dining district. Older residents, however, frequently complain about the loud music. The city seems to have struck a balance for the time being, allowing the concerts to continue while placating nearby homeowners with sound ordinances and tactful diplomacy.

Most concerts at Jannus Landing Courtyard are all-ages events. The courtyard offers an intimate setting which can accommodate around 1,500 guests. The drawback is the scarcity of seating: Be prepared to stay on your feet during a show at Jannus Landing.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and handicapped parking is available. The venue has no parking area of its own, but there is a city parking garage nearby. Free parking is available a few blocks away, along the waterfront north of The Pier.
