According to a New York Times article, gulf seafood is a cause of concern for many people. "A recent national study by the University of Minnesota found that 44 percent of the people surveyed would not eat seafood from the gulf." This despite the fact that the only contaminated fish found by NOAA came in an area closed to fishing. In fact, the federal government has closed 35 percent of the gulf to fishing.
The only area off the coast of Florida affected by fishing bans at this point is not in the Tampa Bay area. Instead, it is off the southwest coast of Florida just west of the Dry Tortugas.
