Heritage Village Public Art Project Seeks Submissions
The Pinellas County Cultural Affairs Department, under the guidance of the Public Art and Design Committee, has issued a call to artists to compete for the Heritage Village Public Art Project.
Heritage Village, Pinellas County's 21-acre living history museum, is nestled within a natural pine and palmetto landscape and is home to some of the area’s most historically significant buildings. A stroll through the complex reveals more than 28 structures and notable features, some dating back to the mid-to-late 19th century.
An interpretive strategy was recently adopted that reshape the village to showcase four major themes personifying the diverse history of Pinellas. These themes include Coastal Living, Agriculture, Community Life and Tourism.
The public art component of the project is expected to focus on these interpretive themes and will likely consist of four separate outdoor sculptures, each one identifying one of the themes. The budget for artwork is $100,000, which must cover all associated costs including design, production, transport, installation, site preparation, travel expenses and permits, taxes and insurance as required.
The competition is open to all qualified U.S. artists. Deadline for submissions is Monday, Aug. 11, 2008. Selection of finalists will take place in November 2008 with presentations by finalists slated for November 2008. Final reviews will be completed in December 2008 and a contract with an artist will be awarded in January 2009.
Applications may be submitted to: Mark Flickinger, Heritage Village Public Art Project, Pinellas County Cultural Affairs Department, 13805 58th St. N., Suite 2450, Clearwater, FL 33760-3733.
